Trump’s Controversial Gaza Plan: U.S. Control and Forced Displacement?
During a White House press conference alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former U.S. President Donald Trump put forth a controversial plan for the United States to assume control of Gaza, emphasizing a "long-term ownership position." Trump stated, "The US will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too. We'll own it."
Trump also suggested the displacement of Palestinians to other regions, despite strong opposition from neighbouring countries. Jordan and Egypt rejected the new idea, while the Palestinian ambassador to the UN asserting, "Our homeland is our homeland."
Netanyahu responded to Trump’s proposal, remarking that it is an idea "worth paying attention to." Meanwhile, Hamas dismissed the plan, stating that it is "a recipe for creating chaos and tension in the region. Our people in the Gaza Strip will not allow these plans to pass."
The ongoing conflict has resulted in devastating casualties. According to the Gaza Government Media Office, over 61,700 people have been killed in Gaza.
The destruction in Gaza has been severe. UN reports indicate that around 60% of buildings, including schools and hospitals, have been damaged or destroyed, with 92% of homes affected. Trump questioned whether displaced Palestinians would even want to return to Gaza, calling it a "symbol of death and destruction." He further stated, "Why would they want to return? The place has been hell," despite a journalist interjecting, "Because it’s their home."
Instead, Trump suggested offering Palestinians a "good, fresh, beautiful piece of land" elsewhere. However, many Palestinians have already expressed their determination to return to their land, even if their homes have been destroyed. As one displaced resident, Nadia Qassem, said, "We have been waiting for this day for so long. We want to return home… Even though my house is destroyed. I miss my land and my place."
In response to Trump’s proposal, a Hamas spokesperson stated, "Our people in the Gaza Strip will not allow these plans to pass, and what is required is to end the occupation and aggression against our people, not expel them from their land."
Trump claimed that "everybody (he’s) spoken to loves the idea of the United States owning that piece of land," and expressed hopes that Jordan and Egypt would accept displaced Palestinians. However, Arab nations have consistently opposed forced displacement, which critics argue amounts to ethnic cleansing.
Following the White House press conference, Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its stance against occupation, declaring its "unwavering" support for Palestinian statehood. The Saudi Foreign Ministry emphasized, "Achieving lasting and just peace is impossible without the Palestinian people obtaining their legitimate rights in accordance with international resolutions, as has been previously clarified to both the former and current US administrations."
Several Arab nations, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Egypt, have reiterated their commitment to a two-state solution, pledging "continued full support for the steadfastness of the Palestinian people on their land."
