Hamas, Israel Agree Gaza Truce Including Withdrawal and Prisoner Swap
Sharm el-Sheikh / Washington / Gaza City — The Palestinian movement Hamas has announced the signing of a landmark agreement with Israel that will end the war on Gaza, ensure the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces, allow humanitarian aid into the Strip, and implement a comprehensive prisoner-exchange deal between Israel and Palestinian factions.
In an official statement, Hamas said the negotiations were conducted “with responsibility and seriousness,” confirming that its delegation, alongside other Palestinian resistance groups, participated in the talks as part of a peace initiative proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump and mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey in Sharm el-Sheikh. The group described the accord as a step to end the “genocidal war” against the Palestinian people.
Hamas expressed “high appreciation” for the mediators’ efforts and commended President Trump’s role in securing what it called a permanent and final cessation of the war and a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. The movement urged Trump and the guarantor states to ensure that Israel fully abides by all clauses of the deal and to prevent any delay or evasion.
According to the official implementation schedule, the agreement will be formally signed in Sharm el-Sheikh at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, 9 October 2025, followed by a meeting of the Israeli Security Cabinet at 3:00 p.m. to approve the accord. An hour later, at 4:00 p.m., the Israeli government is set to convene to ratify it. Within 24 hours of the signing, the Israeli army will begin withdrawing from designated areas outlined in Trump’s “Yellow Line Plan,” extending from Khan Younis in the south to Beit Lahia in the north. Within 72 hours, all Israeli hostages and detainees held alive in Gaza will be released simultaneously, without public ceremonies, while the remains of deceased captives will be handed over gradually. In return, Israel will free around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, including 250 serving long or life sentences, along with additional detainees from the Gaza Strip.
Following the announcement, U.S. President Donald Trump declared that Israel and Hamas had agreed the first phase of his peace plan, calling it a “great day for the Arab and Islamic worlds, for Israel, and for the United States.” Speaking from Washington, Trump said, “This agreement means the release of all hostages very soon, and Israel will withdraw its forces to agreed lines as the beginning of a strong and lasting peace.”
Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump added that all parties would be treated “fairly” and thanked the mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey for their “crucial diplomatic efforts.”
In its statement, Hamas saluted the Palestinian people in Gaza, Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the diaspora, praising their “heroism, steadfastness, and unwavering commitment to national rights.” The group said the “sacrifices of the Palestinian people have thwarted the occupation’s plans of subjugation and displacement,” vowing that these sacrifices “will not be in vain.”
“We remain loyal to our covenant and will not abandon our national rights until freedom, independence, and self-determination are achieved,” the statement concluded.
If fully implemented, the deal will mark the first comprehensive ceasefire and complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza since the war began in October 2023, potentially opening a new chapter after two years of unprecedented destruction and humanitarian suffering.
