Today, we honor the 15th anniversary of the passing of the esteemed Sayyid Muhammad Ali Shihab, a figure whose enduring legacy has left an indelible mark on Kerala. Known for his compassionate demeanor and profound impact, Shihab Thangal was a beacon of hope and leadership in the state.

Born on May 4, 1936, as the eldest son of P. M. S. A. Pukkoya Thangal of the Panakkad Pukkoya family, Shihab Thangal demonstrated exceptional promise from an early age. After pursuing higher education at Al-Azhar University, he expressed a desire to teach at Cairo University. Yet, his father, a venerable leader among Kerala's Muslims, summoned him to serve his native land.

Upon his father's death in 1975, Shihab Thangal ascended to the position of President of the Kerala State Committee of the Indian Union Muslim League. He held this influential role until his passing in 2009, during which he was instrumental in shaping the region's political landscape.

Beyond his political contributions, Shihab Thangal and his family were known for their profound generosity. Their home was a sanctuary for those in need, embodying the spirit of selfless service. He meticulously followed in the footsteps of his father, Sayyid Pookoya Thangal, championing the principles of charity, equity, and community support.

His commitment to secularism and interfaith harmony was pivotal in averting numerous communal conflicts. Shihab Thangal's interventions fostered a climate of mutual respect and understanding, demonstrating his unique ability to merge the realms of politics and spirituality.

In his capacity as Qazi for numerous Mahalls across Kerala, Shihab Thangal was a respected figure, guiding and nurturing countless communities. His life and work stand as a testament to his dedication to justice, unity, and compassion.

As we remember Shihab Thangal today, we celebrate a legacy that continues to inspire and guide future generations, honoring a man whose life was a beacon of hope and a paragon of service.
