Former Qatari Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani Passes Away at 74
DOHA: Qatar is mourning the passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Amir and former Amir of the State of Qatar, who died at age 74, according to an announcement by the Qatar News Agency (QNA).
Sheikh Hamad served as the Amir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013, a period during which he oversaw the country's remarkable transformation from a small Gulf state into a prominent global actor in diplomacy, media, education, and economic development. After 18 years in power, he made the unprecedented decision to voluntarily transfer leadership to his son, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in June 2013, an uncommon transition in the Gulf region that was widely viewed as a model of orderly succession.
During his reign, Qatar experienced rapid modernisation driven by the development of its vast natural gas resources. Major national projects were launched in infrastructure, healthcare, higher education, and transportation. His leadership also saw the establishment of Al Jazeera Media Network, the expansion of Qatar Airways, the creation of Education City, and the development of world-class cultural and sporting institutions, elevating Qatar's international profile.
On the international stage, Sheikh Hamad pursued an active foreign policy that positioned Qatar as a key mediator in regional and international conflicts. The country played important diplomatic roles in Lebanon, Sudan, Palestine, Afghanistan, and other regions, while hosting numerous peace negotiations and humanitarian initiatives. Qatar's successful bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup was also secured during his tenure, marking a historic milestone for the Arab and Muslim world.
Born in 1952, Sheikh Hamad graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom before serving as Commander of the Qatari Armed Forces, Minister of Defence, and Crown Prince. Following his abdication, he remained widely respected as the Father Amir, with his vision continuing to shape Qatar's national development and global engagement.
His passing marks the end of a defining chapter in Qatar's modern history. He is remembered for laying the foundations of the country's contemporary development and for strengthening its role on the international stage through diplomacy, education, economic diversification, and strategic investment.
