Leadership Journey: Dr. Ali Al-Qaradaghi's Rise to Presidency in the International Union of Muslim Scholars

Dr. Ali Muhiyaddin Al-Qaradaghi has been elected on Monday, 8 January 2024 as the President of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, obtaining the majority of votes at 91.51 percent. The election took place in the General Assembly of the Union in presence of 651 scholars from various countries worldwide, held at the Sheraton Hotel's conference hall in Doha.

Dr. Qaradaghi expressed gratitude on his official "X" platform account, stating, "After free and transparent elections, I have been elected President of the International Union of Muslim Scholars." He pledged to faithfully serve his religion and work diligently to convey the message of God with wisdom and balance.

Born in Qara Dagh in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate in the Kurdistan Region, Ali Muhiyaddin al-Qurra Daghi earned his undergraduate degree in Islamic Law from Baghdad in 1975. He pursued a master's degree in Comparative Jurisprudence from Al-Azhar University's Faculty of Sharia and Law in 1980, followed by a doctorate in Sharia and Law (specializing in contracts and financial transactions) from Al-Azhar University in 1985.

Dr. Ali Al-Qaradaghi has been serving as the Secretary-General of the Union since 2010 and is also the head of the Supreme Consultative Council for Interfaith Harmony affiliated with the Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) under the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

Additionally, he holds the position of Vice President of the European Council for Fatwa and Research, previously served as a professor and head of the Department of Jurisprudence and Fundamentals of Law at the College of Sharia and Islamic Studies at Qatar University. Moreover, he is the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of Human Development in the Kurdistan Region.

The International Union of Muslim Scholars, established in 2004, is an Islamic institution that brings together scholars from various countries worldwide.
