Subject: ‍ Doubts Related with Faith

I've been struggling with my faith recently and have been experiencing many doubts. Could you provide proof that the embryology or any other miracle mentioned in the Quran could not have been known at the time due to the lack of technology, such as microscopes? Please help me strengthen my faith

I understand the struggle you are going through, and I commend your courage to seek clarity and strengthen your faith. It’s natural to have doubts, and addressing them is a crucial part of our spiritual journey. Doubts can erupt due to many reasons. Sometimes, even if you believe in certain things, you want to directly experience them. Confusion created by enemies of Islam and ignorance can also lead to such doubts.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah  said:

"نَحْنُ أَحَقُّ بِالشَّكِّ مِنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِذْ قَالَ رَبِّ أَرِنِي كَيْفَ تُحْيِي الْمَوْتَى قَالَ أَوَلَمْ تُؤْمِنْ قَالَ بَلَى وَلَكِنْ لِيَطْمَئِنَّ قَلْبِي" (2:260)

"We are more likely to doubt than Ibrahim when he said: O Lord, show me how You give life to the dead. Allah said: Do you not have faith? Ibrahim said: Of course, but rather to put my heart at rest."

(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:260, Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 4537).

Al-Qurtubi commented on this verse, writing:

"The majority say that Prophet Ibrahim, upon him be peace, never doubted that Allah could give life to the dead, but rather he requested to see it with his own eyes. That is because souls seek light to see what they are told about." (Source: Tafsīr al-Qurṭubī 3/297).

Those who oppose Islam always try to create doubts and confusion in the hearts of believers. Allah said:

"You will surely be put to trial in your property and your lives, and you will hear many harmful things from those given the Book before you and those who commit idolatry, but if you are patient and fear Allah, that is among the matters requiring resolve." (Surah Ali ‘Imran 3:186).

"It is He who revealed the Book to you, in which are decisive verses that are the foundation of the Book, and others are ambiguous. As for those in whose hearts is deviance, they follow what is ambiguous from it, seeking discord and its interpretation, but none knows its interpretation but Allah. Those grounded in knowledge say: We have faith in it; all of it is from our Lord. Yet none will take heed but those of understanding." (Surah Ali ‘Imran 3:7).

Then, the Prophet said:

"If you see those who seek the ambiguous verses in it, they are those whom Allah has named. Beware of them!" (Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 4547).

But Allah reassures us of His infinite wisdom and the truth of His words in the Quran:

( سَنُرِيهِمْ آيَاتِنَا فِي الْآفَاقِ وَفِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَهُمْ أَنَّهُ الْحَقُّ )

“We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. But is it not sufficient concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness?”

(Surah Fussilat 41:53).

Just for example, Let's explore how the Quran’s mention of embryology, as you mentioned in your question,  stands as a miracle, considering the technological limitations of the time.

The Quran mentions the stages of human embryonic development with remarkable accuracy, long before the advent of modern science. In Surah Al-Mu’minun (23:12-14), Allah describes the process:

“And certainly did We create man from an extract of clay. Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging. Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.”

This description aligns perfectly with what modern embryology has discovered only in recent centuries through advanced technologies like microscopes. The sequence of development—from a drop of fluid to a clinging clot, then to a lump of flesh and bones—correlates with the stages of embryonic development recognized today.

Considering the era in which the Quran was revealed, such detailed knowledge was impossible to obtain without divine intervention. During the 7th century, scientific knowledge and technological advancements were not developed enough to allow humans to observe these stages directly. It wasn't until the 19th and 20th centuries that scientists like Karl Ernst von Baer and others began to uncover the complexities of embryology using microscopes and advanced research methods.

In your journey to strengthen your faith, remember that seeking knowledge and understanding is encouraged in Islam. Here are some important tips to fortify our Iman and strengthen our belief.

Reflecting on Quranic Verses

The Quran invites us to reflect on the natural world and our own existence as signs of Allah’s greatness. As you continue to explore and learn, may your heart find peace and certainty in the divine wisdom of Allah.

Allah said:

"Verily, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding, who remember Allah while standing or sitting or lying on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, saying: Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly, exalted are You above such a thing, so protect us from the punishment of the Fire."

(Surah Ali ‘Imran 3:190-191).

Prophet Muhammad emphasized the importance of reflecting upon this verse:

"A verse has been revealed to me tonight and woe to one who reads it without reflecting upon it: Verily, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and day, are signs for those of understanding."

(Source: Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān 620).

Allah said:

"إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِرَ اللَّهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَإِذَا تُلِيَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتُهُ زَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَانًا"

"Verily, the believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts tremble with fear, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases their faith."

(Surat al-Anfal 8:2).

Abu Shurayh al-Khuza’i reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

"Verily, this Quran is a rope. One end is in the hand of Allah and the other end is in your hands. Hold fast to it, for you will never be led astray or ruined ever again." (Source: Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān 122).

Studying the Seerah

Studying the Seerah, the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), holds immense importance in safeguarding Iman.

Allah says in the Quran:

"لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَة" (الأحزاب: 21).

The life and conduct of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) serve as a miraculous testament to his prophethood and a guiding light for humanity. Ibn Hazm eloquently stated:

"Indeed, the biography of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), for those who contemplate it, compels belief in him and testifies that he is truly the Messenger of Allah. If he had no other miracle than his life, it would suffice."

Choosing Good Company

Our friendship circles and networks are very important and will automatically influence our faith and life. Abu Musa reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

"Verily, the parable of good company and a bad company is only that of a seller of musk and a blacksmith. The seller of musk will give you some perfume, you will buy some, or you will notice a good smell. As for the blacksmith, he will burn your clothes or you will notice a bad smell." (Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5534, Grade: Muttafaqun Alayhi).

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

"A man is upon the religion of his best friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends." (Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 2378, Grade: Sahih).

Seeking Knowledge from Authentic Scholars

Ignorance that produces doubts about Islam is a painful disease of the heart for the believers, and the only cure is to ask trustworthy Muslim scholars for clarification. Jabir reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

"Verily, the only cure for ignorance is to ask questions." (Source: Sunan Abī Dāwūd 336, Grade: Sahih).

Allah said:

"فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِن كُنتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ" (Surat al-Nahl 16:43).

"So ask the people of the Message if you do not know."

Muslims should learn about the evil side of the world, the history of idolatry, its origin, and its manifestations, as well as the great tragedies of history, so that they will not repeat the mistakes of the past. Understanding these aspects is crucial in strengthening our faith and adherence to Islam.

Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

"The people used to ask the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, about good, but I would ask about evil for fear it would overtake me." (Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 3606, Grade: Muttafaqun Alayhi).

Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, emphasized this by saying:

"Verily, the bonds of Islam will be undone, one by one, only if there arise people in Islam who never knew the time of ignorance."

By studying and acknowledging these aspects, we can better appreciate the blessings of our deen and remain vigilant against the challenges that may come our way.

Seeking Help from Allah through Prayer

Finally and most importantly, seek help from Allah through prayer. Guidance is always from Allah. The Prophet Muhammad taught us to supplicate:

"يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِك" (O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm on Your religion).

Even though the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) himself fervently prayed for steadfastness in his faith. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would frequently say,

"يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِك".

When Anas asked, "O Messenger of Allah, we have believed in you and what you have brought, so do you fear for us?" The Prophet replied,

"Yes, for the hearts are between two fingers of Allah, He turns them as He wills."

Similarly, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Prophet why he often made this supplication, to which he responded,

"Indeed, the heart of the human being is between two fingers of the fingers of Allah, He turns it as He wills."

Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani, in "Fath al-Bari," explains that the heart's turning refers to Allah's ability to change a person's heart from faith to disbelief and vice versa, and to guide it towards obedience or lead it astray. So it is very important to ask Allah for steadfastness in our Iman.

May Allah guide you, ease your doubts, and fill your heart with tranquility and firm faith.
