All praise is due to Allah, and may His blessings and peace be upon His Messenger ﷺ, his family, and his Companions.

Zamzam is blessed water from the well near the Kaʿbah in Makkah. The Prophet ﷺ said of it: “It is blessed; it is nourishing food.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, no. 2473.) Its blessing calls for respectful use, but this does not mean that it is reserved exclusively for drinking.

It is permissible to bathe with Zamzam water, including for ritual purification (ghusl), and to use it for ablution (wuḍūʾ). According to the majority of jurists, these uses are not disliked.

Imām al-Nawawī states:

“Purification with Zamzam water is not disliked, but it is preferable not to remove impurity with it.”
(Minhāj al-Ṭālibīn, Book of Purification.)

Similarly, Ibn Qudāmah explains that ablution and bathing with Zamzam water are not disliked because it is pure and purifying, like other water. (Al-Mughnī, Book of Purification, discussion of ablution and bathing with Zamzam water.)

However, ritual purification is different from removing physical impurity (najāsah), such as urine or faeces. Shaykh al-Islām Zakariyyā al-Anṣārī notes that removing impurity with Zamzam water is disliked, citing al-Māwardī and al-Rūyānī. Al-Buhūtī likewise explains that this ruling honours the water’s special status. (Asnā al-Maṭālib, Book of Purification; Kashshāf al-Qināʿ, Book of Purification.)

Therefore, any physical impurity on the body should first be washed away with ordinary water before bathing with Zamzam water. If no other water is available and its use is necessary, the dislike is lifted on account of that need, in accordance with the juristic principle that need removes dislike.
